Privacy Policy

PlainRx (“we,” “our,” or “the app”) is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle information when you use PlainRx.

1. Information We Process

1.1 Medical Document Text

When you scan a medical document using PlainRx, the recognized text is processed through a stateless Cloudflare Worker proxy and forwarded to Google’s Gemini AI service to generate a plain-language explanation. This is the only data transmitted outside your device.

What is sent: The text content extracted from your scanned document.
Important: Scanned text may include personal or health information if that information appears in your document.

1.2 Translation History

Your past translations are stored locally on your device in an encrypted file. This data never leaves your device.

2. Third-Party Services

2.1 PlainRx Proxy + Google Gemini AI API

PlainRx uses a stateless Cloudflare Worker proxy plus Google’s Gemini AI (gemini-2.0-flash model) to generate plain-language explanations of medical documents. In strict mode, likely identifiers are redacted before text is sent via encrypted HTTPS.

Google’s data handling (Paid API Tier):

  • Google does not use your data to train or improve its AI models.
  • Google may temporarily retain transmitted data for up to 55 days solely for abuse monitoring purposes.
  • After the retention period, data is automatically deleted.

2.2 Apple Frameworks

PlainRx uses Apple’s built-in frameworks for on-device text recognition (VisionKit) and text-to-speech (AVSpeechSynthesizer). These process data locally on your device.

3. Data Storage and Security

3.1 Local-Only Storage + Stateless Proxying

All translation history, settings, and preferences are stored exclusively on your device. PlainRx does not persist scanned text on app-controlled servers; the proxy forwards requests and returns responses.

3.2 Encryption at Rest

Translation history files are protected with iOS File Protection, which encrypts data when your device is locked.

3.3 No Cloud Sync

Translation history is not synced to iCloud, other cloud services, or other devices.

4. Data We Do NOT Collect

PlainRx does not collect, store, or transmit:

  • Personal identification information (name, email, phone number)
  • Device identifiers or advertising IDs
  • Location data
  • Health records or medical history beyond the current scan session
  • Analytics or usage data
  • Crash reports
  • Cookies or tracking pixels

5. Camera Usage

Camera: Used only when you actively initiate a document scan. No images or photos are stored or transmitted. Only recognized text is processed.

Camera permission is optional and can be revoked at any time through iOS Settings.

6. Children’s Privacy

PlainRx is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children. The app is designed for adult patients and their caregivers.

7. Your Rights and Choices

7.1 Data Deletion

You can delete your translation history at any time: swipe left on individual entries, or use “Clear All” in the History tab. Deleting the app removes all locally stored data permanently.

7.2 California Privacy Rights (CCPA)

As a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information is collected, delete personal information, and opt-out of the sale of personal information. PlainRx does not sell, share, or disclose personal information to third parties for commercial purposes.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The updated version will be indicated by the “Last Updated” date at the top.

Please read these Terms of Service (“Terms”) carefully before using PlainRx. By downloading, installing, or using PlainRx, you agree to be bound by these Terms.

1. Acceptance of Terms

By accessing or using PlainRx, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the app.

2. Description of Service

PlainRx is a mobile application that scans medical documents, generates plain-language explanations in both English and Simplified Chinese, provides suggested action items and questions for your healthcare provider, detects potentially urgent medical keywords, and stores your history locally on your device.

3. Medical Disclaimer

PlainRx is an educational tool that provides AI-generated explanations. It is NOT a medical device, medical service, or substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.

All explanations and simplifications are generated by artificial intelligence and are not word-for-word translations. AI output may contain errors, omissions, inaccuracies, or misinterpretations. You should never rely solely on PlainRx for medical decisions.

Always consult a qualified healthcare professional for medical advice. If you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 911 immediately.

4. User Responsibilities

PlainRx is intended for personal, non-commercial use. You are responsible for ensuring documents are scanned clearly and verifying all translated content with your healthcare provider before acting on it.

By using PlainRx, you consent to the processing of scanned medical text through PlainRx’s proxy and Google’s Gemini AI service as described in our Privacy Policy.

5. Intellectual Property

PlainRx and its original content, features, and functionality are owned by the developer. You retain ownership of any medical documents you scan. By scanning documents, you grant PlainRx a temporary, limited license to process the extracted text solely for the purpose of generating explanations.

6. Limitation of Liability

PlainRx is provided on an “AS IS” and “AS AVAILABLE” basis without warranties of any kind. The developer shall not be liable for any medical decisions made based on the app’s output, injuries or adverse outcomes resulting from reliance on the app, errors in AI-generated explanations, failure to detect emergency information, or loss of data stored on your device.

In no event shall the developer’s total liability exceed the amount you paid for the app, or fifty dollars ($50.00 USD), whichever is less.

7. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless the developer from any claims, damages, losses, liabilities, and expenses arising from your use of PlainRx, your violation of these Terms, or any medical decisions made based on the app’s output.

8. Third-Party Services

PlainRx relies on a Cloudflare Worker proxy, Google’s Gemini AI service, and Apple’s built-in frameworks. We are not responsible for interruptions, changes, or discontinuation of these third-party services.

9. Termination

You may terminate your use at any time by deleting the app. Upon deletion, all locally stored data is permanently removed.

10. Changes to Terms

We reserve the right to modify these Terms at any time. Your continued use after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.

11. Governing Law

These Terms shall be governed by the laws of the State of California, United States, without regard to conflict of law provisions.

2. Not Medical Advice

The information provided by PlainRx, including all explanations, simplifications, action items, doctor questions, and emergency alerts, is generated by artificial intelligence and is intended for educational and informational purposes only.

PlainRx does NOT provide: medical advice, medical diagnosis, treatment recommendations, medication guidance, or emergency medical triage.

Always seek the advice of your physician or other qualified healthcare provider with any questions you may have regarding a medical condition or treatment.

3. AI Explanation Accuracy

3.1 Limitations of AI

While the AI produces helpful simplifications in most cases, it has inherent limitations:

  • Inaccuracy: Medical terminology may be incorrectly explained or oversimplified.
  • Omissions: The AI may fail to include important details from the original document.
  • Hallucination: The AI may generate information not present in the original document.
  • Context errors: The AI may misinterpret medical instructions.
  • Medication errors: Drug names, dosages, or administration instructions may be incorrect.

3.2 Not a Certified Translation

PlainRx explanations are not certified medical translations and should not be used for legal, insurance, or regulatory purposes. For certified medical translation, please consult a professional medical translator or interpreter.

4. Emergency Keyword Detection

PlainRx flags terms such as “chest pain,” “911,” “stroke,” “seizure,” “allergic reaction,” “anaphylaxis,” “difficulty breathing,” and “blood in stool.”

This uses simple keyword matching and is not a comprehensive triage system. It may miss emergencies or flag non-emergency contexts. The presence or absence of an alert does NOT constitute medical assessment.

If you believe you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 911 immediately regardless of what PlainRx displays.

5. Text Scanning Accuracy

Scanning accuracy depends on document quality, lighting, camera focus, font size, and paper condition. A single scan may not capture your entire document. Users should review the captured text preview before translating.

6. Text-to-Speech

The text-to-speech feature uses Apple’s on-device speech synthesis. Pronunciation of medical terms and drug names may be inaccurate.

7. Data Processing

Scanned text is transmitted to Google’s Gemini AI over an encrypted connection. While we use a paid API tier where Google does not use your data for model training, we cannot guarantee Google’s compliance with their stated policies.

8. No Doctor-Patient Relationship

Use of PlainRx does not create a doctor-patient relationship or any other healthcare provider relationship between you and the developer.

9. No Warranty

PlainRx is provided “as is” without warranty of any kind regarding accuracy, reliability, completeness, availability, or suitability for any particular medical situation.

10. Assumption of Risk

By using PlainRx, you acknowledge that AI-generated medical explanations carry inherent risks of error and that you are solely responsible for verifying all information with a qualified healthcare provider.

11. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by California law, the developer shall not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of PlainRx.

12. Healthcare Provider Notice

If you are a healthcare provider and a patient presents PlainRx explanations: please be aware they are AI-generated plain-language summaries (not word-for-word translations) and may contain errors. We encourage you to review the original English document.

13. Regulatory Compliance

PlainRx is classified as a general wellness and education tool. It is not a covered entity under HIPAA. However, we employ reasonable security measures including local-only storage and encryption at rest.
